Several hundred people attended the Candlelight Vigil service held in the Galleria shortly before Christmas. The service was a brief memorial for the benefit of families who had lost a loved one during the year, and featured a slide presentation on two screens of the deceased family members we honored and remembered.
The program, hosted by Inglewood Park Cemetery and Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary, began with welcoming remarks from the presidents of each company, followed by speakers, prayer and song. Pastor James McKnight of the Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship, and Fr. Hernando Barba of the Holy Byzantine Orthodox Catholic Church provided words of comfort in English and Spanish, and each offered prayers and blessings for those in attendance. The candles were lit and the chapel glowed with their light while the people sang "Silent Night"/"Noche de Paz." The daughter of one of the deceased read a poem she wrote for her father. Pastor McKnight led the assembly in the Lord's Prayer, and the candles were then extinguished.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, refreshments were served. Many people left the chapel and those waiting outside came in to watch the slide presentation. Families shared tears, laughter, hugs, memories and fellowship, and many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gather and honor their loved ones.
