Pay Online With nearly two hundred photos entered into Inglewood Park Cemetery’s “City of Angels” photography contest, six local photographers won top honors and cash prizes. The theme of the contest focused on the 115-year-old cemetery’s numerous stone angels scattered throughout the memorial park, some dating back to the cemetery’s early start.
Winning First Place in the “Pure Photography” category in which minimal post-editing was allowed, was Courtney Gladney with her entry, “Cross Her Heart.” Winning First Place in the “Creative Eye” category, which allowed special effects, photo-montage and other post-processing treatments, was Jarl Ondine, whose entry was entitled “Blue Angel.” Each photographer won $500.
Second Place winners were Stephanie Vahedi for “Resurrection” in the Pure Photography category and Joseph Francis for “From On High” in the Creative Eye category. Each second place winner took home $250. Third place winners were Anna Smith for “Forever Your Guardian Angel” in the Pure Photography category and Helaine Cummins for “Praying for Humanity” in the Creative Eye category, each winning $100.
The judging was done by a combination of popular votes on the photo contest’s website and a blue-ribbon panel of judges that included Gerard Burkhart, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist/educator and Calvin Alagot, a photo editor for the Los Angeles Times.
The contest was open to amateurs, photography enthusiasts and professionals alike over the age of 18.
“Over the past 100-plus years, there have been so many incredible features that have come to grace our property, from beautiful historic mausoleums to magnificent works of stained glass art to our magnificent stone angels,” said general manager, Rick Miller. “I think all who come out to Inglewood Park Cemetery are bound to see something to excite their artistic sensibilities.”
According to Mr. Miller, the six winning photographs along all the other entries will be exhibited online at www.IPC-PhotoContest.com through the end of February, and perhaps in a future live exhibit depending on the safe return of physical gatherings.
